Mt. OlympusShaun Hart of Salt Lake City was injured when a loose boulder fell and hit him in the leg. The injury prevented him from hiking down the mountain. The 23-year-old experienced hiker and climber had all the essentials with him as preparation for any untoward accident during the hike. Authorities disclosed that he had plenty of water, a cell phone, appropriate gear and a hiking partner.

According to the report, he was hiking with his friend Greg from Washington State on Mt. Olympus’ west slab trail on Tuesday.

Hart’s family called 911 around 6:30 p.m. The search and rescue team ascended the mountain to retrieve Hart and by 11:00 p.m., Hart was able to walk down the trail from the mountain with the aid of a walking stick and the rescue crew by his side.

Hart was reported to be happy to be off the mountain and reunited with his family. He did not give details regarding his injury and just stated that his entire leg was hurt.

Hiking is a popular activity this summer and Christensen & Hymas reminds all hiking enthusiasts to adhere to the basics of hiking. This includes not going for a hike alone and wearing appropriate clothing. Always bring a cell phone, plenty of water and inform family members where you plan to hike and what time you should be expected home. It is also good to require your family members to contact authorities in case you failed to come back at the estimated or agreed time. Adherence to these basic hiking tips spells the difference between life and death.
