Eighteen officers from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation-Utah Lake State Park, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and the Utah Highway Patrol were reported to have conducted a checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Halloween night.
The DUI checkpoint was conducted on Geneva Road between Provo and Orem. The report stated that 20 arrests were made on Halloween. Officers made six DUI arrests, 15 felony and misdemeanor drug arrests, five alcohol arrests, three traffic citations and five vehicles were impounded.
According to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, some of the DUI arrests were drug-related and some were alcohol-related.
Authorities may have used previous experience during Halloween as a basis for the checkpoint. Christensen & Hymas appreciates this initiative in the part of the officers to prevent DUI related crashes on Utah roads and reminds everyone to designate a driver to avoid DUIs.
Utah Department of Public Safety says driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a frequently committed crime in Utah. Reports indicated that there were more than 12, 500 arrests for DUI in Utah in 2012. News reports had also featured some fatal crashes involving DUI.
