After hitting a 6-year-old girl last week, Highland man Joseph Mitchell Pantos has been charged for possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence. The accident occurred in Duchesne when Pantos failed to yield to two pedestrians at a crosswalk and struck 6-year-old Lonnie Walker Brady, sending her 40 feet in the air. The girl was flown to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City in critical condition, and as of Friday Sep. 30 was in stable condition with a positive prognosis. Methamphetamine was found in Pantos’ vehicle at the time of the accident, thus adding to an already extensive list of charges.

We sincerely hope for the improved condition of this young girl. This kind of an accident brings sadness to all aware, and we hope she will fully recover in due time.

No Respecter

Young Lonnie’s grandfather, Darren Brady, has acted as the family’s spokesperson throughout the ordeal and has conveyed that their family is no stranger to such tragedy. Within the past two years, two other family members have died in separate motor vehicle accidents, and another family member had twins die at childbirth. Such stark pain in one family seems difficult for the majority of us to even fathom.

At such a time, when pain strikes so deep and respects neither person nor situation, wondering when enough is enough is common—it is a phase of grief. A period of grief is not only common but also necessary for almost all those who suffer loss or hardship. The sources of solace at such a time vary according to personal beliefs and convictions, but even amongst those of common schools of faith and thought, no suffering will be alike. Darren Brad reports that a combination of spiritual belief and support from those close to the family has helped them to cope. We again express our best wishes for the recovery of young Lonnie and that her family might find a measure of collective peace following their many years of difficulty.
