Two cyclists were harassed by a motorist yesterday for more than five minutes, much of which was captured on a video the two took of their ride and posted to YouTube. Cyclist Dirk Friel and his riding companion were entirely within their rights as cyclists as they rode single file when a driver in an SUV came upon them and began honking and approaching their bicycles at dangerous proximities. The cyclists motioned for the driver to pass, and there was plenty of room to do so; yet the driver remained, and the two finally took out their cameras and began to film. Colorado State Patrol is investigating; they have already identified the driver and now are looking at possible charges.
Such events are truly frightening. Apparently, few motorists understand that cyclists have as much right to the road as they do—this is the law. When such events lead to harm for the cyclist, help may be necessary in order to hold the driver accountable and receive compensation for their injuries in the accident.
