An accident involving a cyclist and a motorist was reported last Monday, January 13. According to the report, the SUV was making a left turn from Dixie Downs Drive onto Sunset Boulevard around 12:20 in the afternoon. Allegedly, it was at this point that the SUV struck the cyclist in the crosswalk while heading north.

St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said the cyclist was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries to his legs.

Despain added that the SUV driver was cited for negligent collision.

There are a lot of dangers out there for cyclists, especially when vehicles are involved. Risk of injury is compounded by the cyclist’s position high off of the ground. He or she is also at a higher risk of head injury and other serious consequences as a result of the collision.

We are very glad that the cyclist wasn’t critically injured and would like to remind everyone on the road to exercise safety precautions. Be a responsible motorist by making yourself always aware of other road users and take all traffic rules seriously. While making turns, especially at intersections, make sure that you watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists. An easy way to avoid accidents is to make sure you keep all distractions to a minimum. Distracted driving can be just as dangerous as impaired driving.
