A motorcyclist was rear ended on 1-15 when motorist driving a Nissan Maxima failed to break in time. According to KSL, two cars were following the motorcycle too closely in congested traffic. The Maxima passed the car in front of it and then pulled back into the lane, behind the motorcycle.
When traffic slowed, the Maxima applied breaks, but it was too late; it hit the motorcycle, throwing the rider onto the road. While the man was wearing a helmet, he did sustain critical injuries, and was flown to a Provo hospital. No further information about his injuries are yet available, nor do we know if the driver of the Maxima was ticketed.
Motorists need to remember that motorcycles are no match for other vehicles. Tailgating is never a wise decision, but in the case that it involves a motorcycle, it is even more dangerous. Rear ending a motorcycle, no matter at what speed, could mean death for the rider(s).
The Utah Department of Public Safety recommends these tips for driving around motorcycles:
- Check your blindspot – motorcycles are even harder to see than cars
- Don’t tailgate motorcycles
- Use extra caution at intersections
- Focus on the road (not your phone or other distracting devices)
