A Daily Herald report identifies the pedestrian, who was hit and killed just before 6:30 a.m. near 700 N. University Avenue, as Rosa Merino, 42.
According to Provo Police Lt. Matt Siufanua, Merino was walking to work because the brakes in her car were out. The report states that Merino was crossing the street when she was hit by a vehicle identified as an older model GMC pickup truck. The driver of this vehicle is described as a man in his 50’s.
According to Provo Police Lt. Matt Siufanua, responders were initially unable to get a pulse or breath from Merino and began CPR. They were able to get a pulse and transported her to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in critical condition, where Merino was later pronounced dead.
The report states that Merino was a single mother and she left behind three daughters at the ages of 12, 14, and 16. Siufanua disclosed to the media that he was working with the Provo School District to set up donation information for Merino’s children following the accident.
It has also been disclosed that the driver of the pickup truck is not yet arrested or charged. Because there is no citation or charge filed against him, police cannot release his name.
Siufanua said the driver was distracted by something in his car and wasn’t watching the road at the time of the accident.
Christensen & Hymas offers its condolences to the family of Merino. We hope for support and strength for the bereaved family and friends.
This accident is another illustration of the consequences of distracted driving. Once again, we encourage motorists to pay extra attention to the roads and be conscious of other road users, especially pedestrians and bicyclists. Accidents can happened in a few seconds, particularly when you take your eyes off the road. Please, obey all traffic rules and share the road.
