A bicyclist was rushed to the hospital after he was hit by a car Tuesday. The man was reported to be riding his bike when he decided to cross a street near the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon when he was hit by a car who did not see him.
Reports cited the 56 year old man was struck around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He originally was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head and other injuries. On Wednesday morning, the bicyclist’s condition was cited to have improved and his evaluation was decreased from critical to serious condition.
Sgt. Mark Askerlun stated the cyclist was crossing Wasatch Boulevard (3500 East) to enter the Cottonwood Canyon when the driver of a northbound Toyota Sedan hit the bicyclist. The driver of the Sedan was not hurt in the accident. The driver called the police immediately and the cyclist was taken to Intermountain Medical Center.
Sgt. Askerlun of the Cottonwood Heights Police Station, stated that although the cyclists conditions were serious, he is talking and recovering well with his friends and family.
Police have withheld the identity of the bicyclist while the investigation is pending to determine whether the driver of the Toyata Sedan will be charged.
Christensen & Hymas is thankful the bicyclist condition had improved quickly. Being on a bicycle involved in a collision with a bigger vehicle often causes intense injury to the bicyclist, especially when they are hit with speed.
