A crash near Coalville, Sumit County Saturday afternoon claimed the lives of two women.
According to the report, a lady was driving a white Mazda four-door sedan eastbound on I-80 northeast of Coalville. She crossed into the opposite lane of traffic for an unknown reason, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. Authorities said that the Mazda struck a westbound Mercury SUV driven by a 65 year-old-woman.
The collision killed both women drivers. Utah Highway Patrol disclosed that both drivers were alone in their vehicles during the crash. The crash closed westbound lanes of the interstate in the area Saturday afternoon, diverting traffic for several hours afterward.
The article also revealed that UHP officials attributed the hindered initial reporting of the crash to a poor cell phone signal.
Utah Department of Public Safety issued a fact sheet that says in 2011:
- 52,287 motor vehicle crashes in Utah resulted in 22,325 injured persons and 243 deaths.
- The Utah death rate per mile traveled was lower than the U.S. rate.
- A motor vehicle crash occurred in Utah every 10 minutes, a person was injured in a crash every 23 minutes, and a person died in a crash every 36 hours.
