According to a report given by Deseret News, a motorcyclist was traveling in the carpool lane when two vehicles in front of him crashed. The 24-year-old motorcyclist hit one of the vehicles and was thrown from the bike. The man was wearing a helmet, but it fell off because the straps were not tightened properly, according to Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson.
This three vehicle accident happened at on I-15 near 4900 South last Monday, July 1, 2013. The motorcyclist was unconscious when medical personnel arrived. He was brought to the hospital in extremely critical condition and is believed to have suffered severe head injuries. The motorcyclist was the only person injured in the accident according to the report.
Authorities remind motorcyclists to wear properly fitting safety gear and equipment. Leave room for other motorists and do not follow too closely to give yourself time and space to react properly. Most common causes for motorcycle crashes are tailgating, excessive speed, being hit from behind by other motorists, being side swiped by other vehicles on the road, and crashing into another vehicle due to illegal u-turns. Moreover, motorcyclists are asked to pay attention to the surroundings, as all motorists should be aware of other road users. Motorcyclists are sometimes hard to spot and motorists should always be on the lookout for them.
