Utah Department of Transportation is giving out official warnings to travelers to watch out for re-striping trucks through the winter. Because the lane paint on part of the freeway has been accidentally ripped off by snowplows, the city of Salt Lake has put out vehicles to re-stripe the lanes throughout the winter. According to KSL, UDOT spokesman John Gleason said that the biggest problem area right now is in the eastbound lanes of I-80.
The extremely cold weather makes it impossible to to permanently fix the problem. They cannot properly dig the grooves and lay down the paint. But the temporary lanes will last for several days.
Gleason said, “We’ll do this as many times throughout the winter until we can get a permanent solution in the springtime.”
He also said that there might be traffic delays, but the process of painting temporary lanes is completed quickly, so delays should be at a minimum.
Wintertime driving can be dangerous. Here are a few tips from the Weather Channel about driving in winter climates:
- Allow yourself extra time to reach your destination
- Practice driving in a snowy, open parking lot, so you are familiar with how your car handles in the snow
- Leave at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you
- Keep your lights and windshield clean; turn on your lights to increase visibility
- Break gently to avoid skidding
- Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads
- Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and the roads in front of them are probably worse than the road behind!
From all of us at Christensen & Hymas, keep yourselves safe on the road this winter!
