Author Stephen Covey Involved in Bicycle Accident

Friday, April 20th, 2012

Stephen CoveyProminent author and motivational speaker Stephen Covey was injured in a bicycling accident last week in Provo, Utah. Covey was riding through the steep foothills of this university town south of Salt Lake City when he took a corner too fast and fell off his bike, striking his head and getting knocked unconsciousness. Covey was sent to the hospital, where he has since responded to family members. There is some bleeding on the frontal lobe of his brain, which is being monitored and will determine the extent and severity of his injuries.  No other persons or vehicles were involved in the incident.

The Christensen Law Firm wishes a speedy and full recovery to Mr. Covey, who has had a positive influence in Utah for generations, and we hope for many more years to come.

An Ounce of Prevention….

Covey’s publicist is quoted as saying “He was wearing a helmet, which is good news.” Not only is this “good news”, but wearing a helmet quite possibly saved his life. While not mandatory for cyclists in Utah, wearing a helmet often makes the difference between a goose egg on the head, as in Covey’s case, and permanent brain injury or worse.

Brain injuries in Utah occur too often, many of which are preventable. As personal injury lawyers in Utah, we encourage you strongly to take your safety into your own hands and, like Stephen Covey, wear a helmet. If you or a loved one have been involved in a similar accident as the one above, and despite your precautions still find yourself injured, call us today at (801) 506-0800 to speak with an attorney that cares.

16 Year-Old Recovers Miraculously After Traumatic Brain Injury

16 Year-Old Recovers Miraculously After Traumatic Brain InjuryLast April, 16 year-old Hank Shipman survived a horrible accident when a distracted driver collided with his high school’s van.  The van was carrying his classmates and fellow athletes from a ski race in Oregon.  Hank sustained serious multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, while the other students survived practically unscathed.  The injury consisted of four broken vertebrae, leaving Hank essentially paralyzed.  After two months in the hospital and months more of physical therapy, Hank continued to refuse to give up as staying in a wheel chair was never an option.  Miraculously, today he is again out on the field playing for his school’s baseball team, a feat that no one ever expected.  This young adult’s attitude and demeanor can teach us that through dedication and positive thinking, we can ultimately accomplish anything.  If you have ever sustained a brain injury from a car accident due to the negligence of another person, contacting a brain injury attorney will assist you in meeting your legal needs.

Managing Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms

Fortunately, Hank has recovered quite well, despite all that he has endured.  Not everyone is as lucky.  If you have had to endure long-term symptoms due to a traumatic brain injury, the following is a modified list of how to manage your injury provided by maketheconnection.net:

  1. Make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep each night;
  2. Write things down;
  3. Make a daily plan and live that plan;
  4. Avoid alcohol-it can hinder the healing process;
  5. Avoid caffeine,  cold medications that treat nasal congestion, or other products that contain pseudoephedrine—they may increase the symptoms;
  6. Find a hobby;
  7. Open up to others—to keep you from feeling isolated and to give friends and loved ones a chance to help you; and
  8. Don’t forget that symptoms are a normal part of the recovery, and they will eventually become better.

New Technology To Diagnose TBI Utilized By Traumatic Brain Injury Attorney

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Brain scanCBS News reported that “about 1.7 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury, or TBI, each year.”  A TBI is considered stress on the brain caused by trauma, impact, or severe motion.  Most TBI’s are mild; they come in the form of mild concussions, light jarring, or general bumps to the head.  These light injuries often will heal on their own.  When the trauma is more severe, healing is up in the air which makes the diagnoses more difficult for doctors to ascertain.  According to CBS News, a new technology for diagnosing brain trauma has been developed, which a traumatic brain injury attorney could use to further aid his client in getting the compensation needed for recovery.

The new technology is an MRI-based tool that scans the brain much like an X-ray.  It can project images of the scan in multi-color which can ultimately show where the damage was done in the brain.  The new technology uses a high-definition fiber tracking image system that allows the doctor to see exactly where the fibers of the brain have been torn or otherwise damaged.

Traumatic Brain Injury Attorney Aided By New TBI Technology

By using this new technology, the doctor can better understand and diagnose the problems associated with the injury.  The traumatic brain injury attorney can also use the technology to aid his client.  The information gathered by the technology could enlighten the insurance agencies as to the severity of the brain damage and encourage them to be more generous in settlements and payouts.

A traumatic brain injury attorney at the Christensen Law Firm understands the power of this new technology and is willing to pursue its value.

Another resource the Christensen Law Firm provides is a series of Utah Accident Books.  These books are free!  Call us today at 1-800-LAW-BOOK to obtain your free copy.

Head Trauma And The Power To Think: Traumatic Brain Injury Attorney

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

head injury In previous posts, I have written about the dangers associated with recreational activities, with regards to head trauma.  I have also written on memory and how both short- and long-term memory are affected when head trauma occurs.  Today, I would like to write about the power to think clearly and what thinking does for us on a daily basis, and how we often take it for granted until that power is taken away.  If the power to think is ever taken, a traumatic brain injury attorney may become more than an attorney, possibly an advocate and friend.

The power to think is vital to living a full and prolific life.  It allows us to work and play.  Thinking allows us to understand the world around us.  When we think through problems we are confronted with, we understand life on a deeper and more intimate level.  This same deeper level of understanding comes from writing and reading.  The power to connect thoughts and ideas that are employed in writing and reading is so vital to a prosperous life that when that power is taken away, the result is a complete loss of the ability to provide for self and others.

If the power to think were ever diminished, life would soon ebb and cease to be meaningful.  Our power to provide for ourselves and those we love would ultimately be wiped away to nihil.  Losing the power to think clearly is a serious threat when brain injuries occur.

Brain trauma can hinder the power to think.  The power to think can be altered to such a degree that simple tasks are made difficult.  The ability to be coherent and articulate speech comes from the mind.  If you or someone you know has suffered a blow to the head, or has gotten their “bell rung,” first, get medical attention, and second, get a traumatic brain injury attorney.

The Christensen Law Firm understands that losing the power to think clearly is a serious threat if brain injuries have occurred.  There is a traumatic brain injury attorney from the Christensen Law Firm available if you ever need one.  They offer FREE Utah accident books for the express purpose of educating anyone who wishes to know more about brain injuries and the rights of a victim of brain trauma.  Call them immediately at 1-800 LAW BOOK to obtain your free copy.
