Deseret News reported an accident involving four teenagers in Alpine neighborhood at 4 p.m. Saturday. According to the report, police authorities noticed a car that was being driven recklessly. Police attempted to pull the car over but the driver tried to flee from the Lone Peak police. A police chase ensued and in the process, the speeding car hit a deer. Man in Serious Condition after Acid Burn Accident

Man in Serious Condition after Acid Burn Accident

Fox 13 reported that an independent contractor sustained second and third degree burns on his feet and ankle. The man was working in a vat containing 95 percent sulfuric acid solution at the facility located at 11600 West and SR-201 in Magna. The facility was identified as Kennecott Smelter. The man was Life Flighted to the hospital and reported to be in serious condition. An occupational Safety website listed the physical and chemical characteristics of sulfuric acid. According to the article, sulfuric acid is a clear colorless oily liquid. It is also odorless and will not burn. The acid is considered very toxic and fatal if inhaled. It can form very hazardous decomposition products. Sulfuric acid is highly reactive and incompatible with many common chemicals. It reacts violently with water and is corrosive. The acid causes severe skin burns and eye damage. Skin contact can cause pain, redness, burns, and blistering. Permanent scarring can result. A severe exposure can cause death. Recommended handling tips include the following: • Avoid generating vapors or mists. • Immediately report leaks, spills or failures of the safety equipment (e.g. ventilation system). • Prevent accidental contact with incompatible chemicals. • Never add water to a corrosive. Always add corrosives slowly to COLD water. • If product is transferred to another container, ensure new container is suitable for the product. • Never reuse empty containers, even if they appear to be clean. Store the acid in an area that is cool, dry, out of direct sunlight and away from heat and ignition sources. Store it separately from incompatible materials. Avoid bulk storage indoors. Regularly inspect...
Utah Woman Sky Diver Died in a Mishap

Utah Woman Sky Diver Died in a Mishap

ABC4 News reported that a 30 year old woman died in a skydiving accident. According to the police authorities, the accident happened around 1 PM on Sunday at Tooele Valley Airport. The woman was diving with Skydive Utah and is known as an experienced diver. Apparently her parachute did open properly but something went wrong between the opening of the parachute and her hitting the ground hard. She sustained injuries to her head and legs and the EMTs, who were already on the ground at the time of the accident, cared for her until paramedics arrived. She was flown to the University of Utah where she underwent surgery. The woman later died of her injuries. It was still unclear what caused the accident and the name of the woman was withheld pending notification of family members. Authorities were unsure if the strong wind reported that day contributed as a factor to the incident. Skydive Utah lists on their website the requirements for skydivers who might want to jump alone. This includes obtaining a license and having a minimum of 25 jumps. We at Christensen & Hymas offer our condolences to the bereaved family. Losing a family member to an unfortunate accident is something that a lot of people have gone through but never wished to. We hope for a safer society for our loves that are using the roads daily or pursuing a worthwhile activity this summer. 8 Kids in Rollover Accident Suffered Minor Injuries

8 Kids in Rollover Accident Suffered Minor Injuries

Fox 13 News reported that an SUV was struck by another vehicle as it went through a red light causing it to roll over. 8 children and two adults were inside the SUV. Fortunately, they were wearing their seat belts and suffered only minor injuries. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital to be examined by doctors as a precautionary measure. The accident took place at 900 West and 600 North in Salt Lake City. The news report did not disclose the identity of the victims. There was no mention if a traffic citation was given to any of the drivers involved in the accident. The wearing of a seat belt has been known to save lives in an event of a car accident. It is considered illegal for adults to not buckle up their children ages 12 and below in the backseat of the car or using to inappropriately use booster seats for younger children. Even if you car pool or do not drive your own car, the driver will be held liable under the  law if he/she does not make sure everyone–especially children–are not restrained safely. Parents are required to use booster seats if they choose to car pool. Moreover, booster seats should be appropriate for the child’s weight and height. Use only booster seats recommended by authorities and those that are especially designed for use in your particular vehicle. We urge everyone to drive safety on the road. Basically, safety means wearing seat belts, using the proper child safety restraints, and obeying traffic rules. Share the road and do not speed in order to reach...

Motorcyclist Badly Hurt after Multiple-Car Crash

A highway rollover involving an apple-laden semitrailer truck indirectly caused another accident involving two cars and a motorcycle in Spanish Fork. According to the KSL news report, the driver of the semi-trailer truck suffered minor injuries after the truck carrying 60,000 pounds of apples rolled over in an attempt to negotiate a curve too quickly, leading to U.S. 6, exit 257, from I-15. The truck tipped to its right side and was laid across the three lanes on the state road closing the off ramp for three hours. The second accident happened in the traffic that accumulated due to the rollover accident. It was reported that a fast moving passenger car attempting to change lanes hit a motorcycle. The car’s side bumper hit the motorcycle causing it to crash against another car that was stopped due to the traffic. The motorcyclist landed on the roadway and lost his helmet as a result of the impact. Police said he suffered a compound fracture to his right leg, abrasions, and head injuries. He was flown by a helicopter to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in serious but stable condition as of Saturday night. Utah Highway Patrol cautions motorists to always watch out for motorcyclists on the road. They are often hard to spot but they are there as road users too. Everybody is encouraged to share the road in order to avoid accidents such as this. Christensen & Hymas hopes for the fast recovery of the motorcyclist.
